The 5th Animal Nutrition Congress was recently held in Cordoba, Spain, was a highly successful event hosted by the Andalusian Association of Animal Feed Manufacturers (AFACA) and the Spanish Confederation of Manufacturers of Compound Animal Feed (CESFAC).
The congress began with the presentation of the CESFAC Medal of Merit for Animal Feed being awarded to Isabel García Tejerina, the Spanish Minister of Agriculture.

A large number of other authorities participated in the conference, indicating how important the animal feed industry is to local and Europe-wide economies. In attendance at this year‘s conference was Phil Hogan, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food, the Andalusian Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, as well as the Spanish Secretary General for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The event was held alongside the 28th European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) Congress , which brought together major players from all parts of the animal feed industry to share news, research, and opinions on the future of both regional and European animal feed markets.
Among the many topics discussed were;
- The importance of competitiveness in European feed production
- Combating antimicrobial resistance
- Development and innovation plans
- The importance of communication in the animal feed sector
- The role of the Circular Economy in animal feed markets
- The impact of animal feed production on the environment

Meanwhile, Phil Hogan, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, gave a presentation on the EU’s Horizon 2020 plan. A €77 billion program designed to, “promote Europe’s scientific and technological excellence to extend the frontiers of human knowledge, boost the EU’s economic competitiveness, address societal challenges and remove barriers to innovation, including between the public and private sector.”
Commissioner Hogan was keen to highlight the advantages of the program for the animal feed sector, and invited all members to take part by promoting and investing in research.
The event was also held in collaboration with the Portuguese Association of the Animal Food Industry (IACA).
